Advancing Ag and Leadership Conference
by Alice Hehli
When starting the Advancing Ag program back in September, I was unsure of what to expect from the program. I had hoped to be able to travel around Canada throughout the program and be able to experience lots of new things, however, that idea was changed once Covid was a concern. I went into the program in the hopes to learn more about agribusiness and to build connections in the agribusiness world. The mentor I got paid with was the perfect person for that and I got the opportunity to meet Melissa Reinhardt, who works with Farm Credit Canada (FCC). The program gave me the opportunity to meet someone who is currently working for the company that I want to one day work for, and it has helped me with choosing my schooling path, making a connection and learning about a summer student position opportunity with FCC. I got to meet lots of mentees at our first meeting in Calgary and then again at the Advancing Ag leadership Conference. The conference was in Banff in November and it was a great weekend. I got to learn something about my own leadership style and got to reflect on lots of things that I can implement into my daily living. Not only did we get to enjoy a very informative conference, but the mentees got a chance to meet each other again. I was able to connect with people who are involved in all different areas of the agricultural sector. The people I have met so far through the program could all be important connections to have one day as the agricultural industry is always growing and changing. So far, the Advancing Ag experience has been a great one and it has given me the opportunity to start building my own connections in the agricultural world as well as experience many great conferences and seminars.
